A Time To Gather

This is what the skies have looked like for much of the week. To me, it is a lovely sight after such a hot dry summer. The garden seems to be revived and renewed. The garden is filled with activity now. The calendar says it's Fall. Can cool Autumn weather be far behind?

I am sorry the quality of this picture is so bad, but the only way I could get a picture of the Hummers, was through the window at our breakfast nook. The Hummers have been emptying the feeders so quickly, I have had to refill them twice a day. We have counted 13 at the feeder at one time.

With the rain, the Lantana has put out new blooms.

As well as the Zinnias.

It seems all the bees have a renewed zeal for gathering food.

The roses have a new flush of blooms.

I just can't resist a pretty face!

Fat little guys with pollen sacs filled.

They are certainly finding plenty to gather on the Purple Heart.

It was wonderful to have those cool days and the rain but I soon began to miss the sun and I am much happier now it si back. OU garden is alive with hummingbirds and they have been up to their usual squabbles. I keep telling them to share. I don't know how they manage round the feeder. That is a lovely rose. I bet it is fragrant too.

The Hummers social skills do leave something to be desired! We have one little guy that has declared ownership of the feeder, and sits on top and chases off other thirsty Hummers. They are so much fun to watch. Yes, Gruss an Aachen is fragrant, but very lightly so.

Your garden certainly is humming with activity, MG! So glad you finally got some rain. We got some much-needed rain this past week, too, but instead of one nice shower, it was gray and drizzly all week. I'm ready for a little sunshine so I can get some plants in the ground before it's too late!

Your hummingbird photo is great! I haven't gotten one decent one all summer, but I certainly haven't had the crowds you have had. I've read that hummingbirds are very territorial and stake out a feeder for themselves, not letting any others feed from it. Your hummers must be a social group:)

Rose, we had the drizzly week goin' on too! I loved it--it kept the temps down, and everything has revived--well almost everything.

The Hummers do stake out a claim on the feeder...we have one little guy that sits on top of the feeder, and chases the others that come in. As he is chasing off those, several dive in to grab a sip before he comes back around to see them at HIS feeder. I think he expends much more energy trying to defend the feeder, than if he would just let everyone have a drink.

Yes, things are looking good your way! We've had lots of clouds, but just a little rain.

Sue, I hope you get some rain soon. By the look of your lush beautiful garden, you have had some good rains this summer.

Oh, if only we had Humming Birds here, every time I see them I think what magical little birds they are.

I am so glad you had the rain you have longed for, your blooms look wonderful especially those beautiful roses.

We had a glorious day on Saturday, sunny and warm and were promised the same for Sunday but it started well and then ran out of steam by lunchtime, the afternoon was dull and gloomy :( I don't need hot weather but the sunshine makes such a difference, I'm not looking forward to the long dark days of Winter at all.

All your flowers look so pretty and cheerful :)

Dear Shy Songbird,

The Hummingbirds are truly magical little creatures. We all enjoy watching their antics so much...Charley has names for all of them. They will hover in front of the window when we are sitting there as though to say, "Thanks for the food."

I hope you get some more beautiful days to enjoy your garden before winter sets in. It is so hard when the weather is gloomy and too cold to be out in the garden playing in the dirt.

Thank you for your kind words for my flowers. If little Loudon had his way, there wouldn't be any! He tries to pick them all!

We finally got some rain last night... after it dries out a bit, it will be perfect day for transplanting/planting. YAY!!!

Hi Monica! Let's not forget my personal favorite--weeding! Not!

Beautiful blooms. Those roses are such a lovely color. Love the little hummers all gathered around the feeder.

Hi Marnie,

I have often wondered if the majority of the hummers were raised in my Lady Banks rose bush...they seem eager to share the nectar with one another, which is unusual. We do have one that has staked his claim on the feeder and spends all his time chasing off the other hummers. We have so much fun watching them.

We are thrilled to have the rain gone and you all needed it desperately...It just isn't fair! I am so glad you had enough cool weather and rain to get the garden smiling again. The flowers look lovely. Great capture on the hummers and that bee is so Holy Grail! I will get it someday! gail

Well, at least you got some hummer pics! I can't seem to get any - they're just too darn fast!! LOL!

I love your flowers. They are pretty. Especially that last one - purple heart - my favourite!

Gail,

We got some rain yesterday evening and then again in the night and this morning!!! I read that El Nino is back and will affect our weather, causing a wet winter. I am very excited as this will mean a bumper crop of bluebonnets!

As to the Holy Grail of mid-flight bee shots--if only I had a super-macro camera feature, it would have been really awesome. ;-) Some people are never satisfied!

Wendy, I keep saying I am going to remove the screen so I can get some really good shots, but I am afraid if I do, the screen will get damaged or lost (this is one crazy household)...if you have ever rescreened a frame, you know--it's simple but not easy!

I love the purple heart too...and the bees love it.

Your garden is still looking wonderful! We had our feeder up all Summer but sadly no hummers stopped by to visit. How lucky are you to have had 13 at a time!! Thank you for stopping by today and leaving your sweet comment ♥

Hi Deb! Thanks for stopping by and for your sweet comments. It is too bad you didn't have any hummers, they are so much fun to watch...we had several families raise their babies in our Lady Banks rose bush.

Praying for your MIL's complete and total recovery!

Hugs!

Beautiful blooms! I can understand your fear of rattlesnakes, I am afraid of garter snakes :). Lovely white blooms in your ealier post.

Glad to see you are getting rain.

Yay, hummingbirds! I need to switch out the water today. Most of mine have gone on their journey south, so I'm ready for the next group to arrive!

Hello IGW, Thanks for the kind words...I am so thankful for the rain we are getting. Looks like El Nino is back!

Hi Merideth, thanks for stopping by. My garden seems rather quiet and lonely this week...all the hummers have left here too.

Just this week my zinnias re-bloomed, an unexpected surprise. We don't have as many hummingbirds this year, glad to see they are alive and well somewhere else.

Welcome Urban Green, I am so glad you found me...thank you for your kind words. I look forward to getting to know you better. I do love the purple heart. It is such a tough little plant and the bees love it.

The numbers of hummingbirds in your garden is amazing, Morning Glories - I've read the feeder makes a big difference.
I see them all the time, but never in a group.

We got the rain you were wishing for, but now it's too squishy to walk out there!

Annie, we have never had that many hummers at one time before that I can remember. It certainly is squishy outside right now. Instead of gardening, I am spending all my time washing puppy dog feet as they go in and out with their muddy little feet. If this keeps up, I may invest in some dog galoshes!
